Greensboro Urban Loop - Southwest Quadrant

Shortly after the opening of the southeastern section of the Outer Loop (I-85 Bypass), construction began on the Southwest Quadrant that will carry Interstates 40 and 73.  This segment will loop from I-85 at mile 120 to current I-40 just south and east of Piedmont Triad International Airport.  The new highway finally opened to traffic on February 21, 2008.

As a result of the completed highway, Interstate 40 has moved onto the southern half of the loop; completely bypassing the treacherous 'Death Valley' that has plagued motorists for over 40 years.  Interstate 73 is planned (and currently signed on) to use the loop as it will join the highway at Bryan Boulevard.  I-73 will exit the loop at US 220.

Exit 212 - Future I-840 & I-40 Business
From Winston-Salem, Interstate 40 East joins the Urban Loop just beyond the Gallimore Dairy Road Interchange (Exit 211).  To build this complex interchange - a partial cloverleaf with a number of flyovers - I-40's exit with Chimney Rock Road was removed.

Along I-40 West, Exit 212 is split into Exit 212A - for the continuation of the Loop and I-73/840 North - and Exit 212B - Business I-40 East and US 421 South.

Left Image: Overheads signs for Exit 212A&B on I-40 West.  The Exit 212A sign is temporary as when the Outer Loop expands, the overhead will include I-73 and I-840 North shields. (William Lawson; February 23, 2008)

Exit 214 - Wendover Ave.
I-40's interchange with Wendover Ave. is a partial cloverleaf connecting the freeway to one of Greensboro's busiest thoroughfares.  To make way for this interchange, the intersection of Wendover and Guilford College Road was improved to a grade-separated interchange.

Future Interchange - High Point Road
Although not constructed at this time, there are plans to build an eventual interchange with High Point Road.  Judging from available plans for the Urban Loop and from the area around High Point Road itself.  The future interchange would be a very tight diamond.

Exit 218 - 219 - 'The Maze': I-85 & Business I-85
Interstate 40 Eastbound traffic receives a birds eye view of 'The Maze' at Exits 218 and 219.  Eastbound I-40 traffic flies over Interstate 85 and Business 85 before tying into I-85 east of the US 220/I-73 interchange (Exit 122).

Right Image: I-40 West continues after 'The Maze'.  The overpass carries Wiley-Lewis Road over the Urban Loop.  (William Lawson; October 6, 2007)

Left Image: A rather simple overhead for 'The Maze' on I-40 East/I-73 South.  If NCDOT wishes to list all the options at Exit 218 and 219.  It would be one very complicated guide sign. (William Lawson; February 23, 2008)

Right Image: Overheads at Exit 218 - I-85 South/US 29 South/US 70 West.  The overhead does not mention the slip ramp for Grandover Parkway, which is accessed via Exit 218.  Exit 219 is Business I-85 North.  I-73 mysteriously disappears from the overheads even though it still exists on the freeway at this point.  (William Lawson; February 23, 2008)
