Northeast Painter Boulevard - Greensboro Outer Loop

The first section of the 40 plus mile Greensboro Outer Loop to open was a nearly two mile long connector between US 70 and Interstate 40 and 85.  This segment which will become Interstate 840 opened to traffic in May 2002.  The loop will not continue north of US 70 until at least 2010.
Exit 21 - Interstates 40 & 85 and Interstate Business Loops 40 & 85
What will become the eastern end of I-840 trip around Painter Boulevard is the site of one of the more complex interchanges within the state.  Heading 'southbound' on this interchange, the interchange provides access to Downtown Greensboro via Business Loop 85 and current I-40.  Direct connections to I-40 East and I-85 North towards Burlington and later Raleigh or Durham are made by a flyover ramp that carries traffic over the entire interchange.  By going straight, the loop continues to the southeast quadrant onto I-85 South and towards High Point and later Charlotte.  At right, a look at Exit 21 from Future I-840 West.  Signs that will read I-840 West in the future currently read, "TO" US 70.

Exit 19 - US 70
The next, and only other currently open, interchange on I-840 is a partial interchange with US 70.  This interchange, which will be expanded once the highway is completed northward, consists of a loop ramp to US 70 and a diamond on-ramp from US 70.  In the photo at right, taken by Bob Malme, US 70 East approaches the I-840 interchange and will later pass under the freeway.
