What first intrigued Pete Zapadka about former WV 89 was finding the route listed on older PA Maps but not locating it on the most recent West Virginia State Map.  He is correct WV 89 did exist at one time.  H.B. Elkins' West Virginia Highways Page confirms that WV 89 did exist at one time but it is now decommissioned.

The earliest West Virginia Map that I own is a 1994-96 State issued map that does not list WV 89, nor the town of the former route's Eastern Terminus, Bellton.  As recently as the 1997-98 Pennsylvania State Map, WV 89 is shown! The 2000 PA Map does not show WV 89. AAA maps of the state do show County Route 89 running east to west from US 250 one mile south of Bellton to WV 2 in Proctor.  Older Pennsylvania maps and a 1971 WV Gousha Map show current WV 89 continuing North on US 250 and heading east on modern WV 891.

Former Eastern Terminus:

This photo, from Pete Zapadka, shows the Eastern Terminus of WV 89 just south of Bellton.  As you can see, the road is narrow and no lines are painted.  This is almost obvious that WV 89 has been decommissioned for a long long time.

WV 89 had ended at WV 2 in Proctor, at the intersection shown above.

WV 89 is now known as Wetzel County Route 89 or more specifically Proctor Creek Road.  Below, either a signing error or a relic from the route's days as a WV Primary Highway.

This warning sign still shows Route 89 as a primary highway; it may also give the reason why the road was decommissioned some years ago.
