Jump:  NC 231    |   NC 751

NC 39

Route:

Enters Wake County just south of Five County Stadium.
Leaves Wake County just south of interchange with US 64.

Major
Intersections:

US 264 and NC 97 outside Zebulon.  That's all, folks.

History:

Pretty much unchanged since about 1940.  There's not much that can be done to a road that's only 3 miles long.

Attractions:

Five County Stadium at the 264/39 jct.  Home of the Carolina Mudcats!!!

Comments:

Possibly the only numbered road in Wake County that doesn't go through an incorporated area.

39 and NC 96 pretty much parallel each other south of US 64, with 39 going to Selma (it ends at US 70) and 96 going through Selma to Smithfield and points south.

NC 231

Route:

Enters Wake County just outside Wendell.
Ends at Business 64 in Wendell.
Shortest numbered route in Wake County.

Major
Intersections:

None, unless you count the terminus at Business 64.

History:

First sighted in the '40s.  Unchanged since then.

Attractions:

Nothing real exciting.

Comments:

There's not much on a 2-mile road that's worth commenting about.

NC 751

Route:

Begins at US 1 in New Hill.
Leaves Wake County just south of the intersection with US 64.
That is, if it runs through Wake County at all.

Major
Intersections:

Old US 1 in "downtown" New Hill.
US 1 freeway about 1/2 mile south of that.

History:

751 is quite an old route number; the high number it sports is a clue to that.  It was originally a spur off of NC 75 (today's Business US 15-501, University Dr.).  First sighted around 1930, 751 runs right past Duke in Durham, but we'll keep it to Wake County.

Attractions:

New Hill, the smallest incorporated community in Wake County.
And the nuclear power plant, on the road (not signed as 751) past US 1.

Comments:

The comment under "route" about if 751 enters Wake County at all is due to the fact that about half of WC maps show 751 ending at 64, and the other half show it continuing to 1.  The official NC map shows 751 ending at 64, so that must be the correct routing.

My suggestion:  Sign 751 south to US 1.  It would give Durham-ites another route to 1 (less congested, too) other than US 15-501.  It would probably be faster, too.
