History of US 211 in Virginia:
US 211 is the one of the shortest US Highways in the nation.  Although only 59 miles long, US 211 has plenty of history and intrigue.  Created in 1927, the original routing stretched from New Market to Fairfax.  Two years later, US 211 was pushed further east along US 50 to Washington, DC.  The highway's current alignment through Warrenton was established in 1938.  Today, US 211 Business follows the original routing through town.

Beginning in the late 1960's, VDOT began to widen US 211 for most of its entire length.  In 1971, bypasses of Luray and the village of Washington were completed.  Most of the widening would continue into the early 1990s.  Today, the remaining two lane lane sections of US 211 run from Sperryville west to Thorton Gap, and over Massanutten Mountain.

In 1967, US 211 was extended slightly westward from US 11 in New Market to the newly opened Interstate 81.  US 211 was truncated from Washington, DC to its current eastern terminus Warrenton in 1984.  Since the 1984 truncation, there have been no major alignment change - with the exception of widenings - made to US 211.
