So What's the Deal with Those Blank Octagons at Stoplights Dahntahn 'n Nat?

<<<< They've been sitting empty and unused at various intersections downtown for decades.  Here's the scoop on those "missing stop sign holders," you probably have been caught wondering aloud about.

Local road legends have these empty geometric figures as home for stop signs if the power goes out.  Others claim they were some modern and innovative traffic control system that never got off the ground.  If only they were to be for something that complex.  Rather, they were to be used as brackets for mast arms arms that would hold traffic signals at the intersections. (1)   In an article for the Pittsburgh City Paper, Chris Potter attacked the same question. He found out that the arms would extend over the intersection; however, no one knows exactly how the lights were to be mounted on these arms.  It was even suggested that the traffic signals could have been placed inside the octagons. I believe that the signals would be placed inside the mast arms over the highway.

Like many of the freeways and expressways that were proposed in the region, this traffic signal mast arm design never came to be, leaving us to wonder once more of what Pittsburgh would be like if.... I'd love to hear your theories on how you think these octagons, arms, and traffic lights were to be arranged, e-mail me at aprince27@gmail.com and I'll include them on this page.
