During Interstate 40's run through mountainous Haywood County, travelers encounter two tunnels eastbound and one along the westbound lanes.  The odd tunnel is located near mile 8, the pair of tunnels are located near mile 5.  All three tunnels are about one quarter mile in length and are to my knowledge, unnamed.  The three tunnels, which opened in 1968, do not have any visible ventilation units.  All three tunnels allow passing and all contain a curve inside it.

The four still shots below were taken by Alex Nitzman in August of 1999.  They were taken at the entrance to the westbound tunnel near mile 5.  This page was originally located on his 'Misc. Roads' site; he kindly donated the photos and page to All Things NC! in October of 2002.
