Carolina Lost: Buildings
Wilkinson Blvd. Weigh Stations - Mecklenburg County

On the Mecklenburg County side of the Catawba River, two tiny weigh stations sit unused on Wilkinson Blvd. (US 29/74).  Rarely used, these two checkpoints also give clues to how the Charlotte to Gastonia highway once ran.  Four decades ago, Wilkinson Blvd. was replaced by the higher speed, limited-access Interstate 85 a few miles to the north.  There is still operating equipment at both stations and the scales do measure accurately.  When they are actually in operation, these two cinder block buildings are known to catch overweight trucks that were attempting to bypass the scales on the Interstate.
