NCSU CWSP Point-Counterpoint Series

Web Conferencing in the First-Year Writing Class

Laura Samuels

Web conferencing incorporates exciting new technology to allow instructors and students to conference with one another outside of the constraints of traditional "brick-and-mortar" office settings. Students are typically more relaxed when conferencing online and instructors can enjoy the freedom of conferencing from anywhere they have an Internet connection available. On the other hand, Web conferencing also presents some new challenges for participants. For example, computers can limit the quantity of text that is viewable on the screen, which can make global revisions difficult.

This Point/Counterpoint session will discuss the results of a small case study of three Web conferences with first-year writing students and will focus on some of the benefits and challenges of online writing conferences. As always, the first ten participants to register will receive a free lunch from Bear Rock!
