Carolina Lost: Abandoned US 64 - Tar River Bridge - Spring Hope.
Former US 64 Bridge Over the Tar River What: Bridge over Tar River
Where: Quiet Waters Rd Near Spring Hope
Accessibility: Easy (Directions Below)

Quietly hidden from the modern US 64 Freeway or the two lane highway that runs through Spring Hope sits an old alignment of US 64 and the bridge that carried the road over the Tar River.  The bridge is a Camelback Truss with concrete slab approach that seemed to be the common design of early North Carolina steel truss bridges.  A builders plate was not located during this expedition so the age of this bridge is unknown at this time.   The Bridge is blocked off by dirt fill but it is very easy to climb over and explore.

The old concrete pavement of Quiet waters Road. On the concrete slab part of the bridge, the truss bridge hides behind the trees. Further back, the ivy covered mound that blocks vehicles from using the bridge.
A look at the concrete slab part of the bridge. Trees have begun to hide the truss from plain view. A view from underneath the truss bridge.
Overgrowth is common on the structure. Possibly a sign post warning of the vertical height. A great view of the superstructure of the bridge.
Rivets were still the way to go when this bridge was built. A look at a quiet Tar River from the Bridge.
