30 Miles from NC 55 near Cary to US 64/264 near Knightdale

Even though there are two different numbers, 540 is one continuous road using exit numbering based on a complete loop around Raleigh. However, since there's an unconnected gap of 40 miles in the middle of the exit numbering, it can be rather confusing to follow it from one end to the other on this list.  In order to go straight through from NC 55 on one end to US 64/264 on the other, click here to start at NC 55, then jump back to I-40 using the link at the bottom of the page.  To go the other way, click the "Start westbound at US 64/264" link below, then when you get to I-40 use the "Continue westbound to NC 54" link at the top of the list.
