I-55/US 61/MO supplementary 'M', Scott City, MO

An interesting local connection.

I-55 is the major highway, US 61 goes southwest from the interchange (it is combined with I-55 to the north) and Missouri Supplementary route 'M' is the east-west surface road.

At what is otherwise an unexceptional local 'partial-cloverleaf' interchange with a sideroad, US 61 makes things a little bit interesting. US 61 was the major road here before the interstates running to the north where the freeway is now. When I-55 came on the scene, an economical way had to be found to maintain access between US 61 (for mainly local traffic) to the south and route 'M'. The railroad presented an obvious obstacle to a simple set of intersections. The somewhat innovative solution ended up being a looping access grade built within curve of the southbound-on ramp of the I-55 interchange with the resulting intersection with route 'M' being midway between the interchange ramp intersections.

BTW, one question that stuck in my mind while researching this one was "how does someone get between Scott City and neighboring Cape Girardeau (located just off the map to the north, the word 'LEVEE' is in the city of Cape Girardeau) if he/she is not in a motor vehicle (bicycle, running, etc)???". I-55 is the ONLY direct way with the only other possible routes going waaaaaaaaay out of the way to the west...

A neat road place regardless.
