I-710/CA 60 (Long Beach Freeway/Pomona Freeway), Los Angeles County, CA

I-710 (the Long Beach Freeway) runs north-south, CA 60 (Pomona Freeway) east-west.

The junction of the Pomona and Long Beach Freeways in unincorporated Los Angeles County is one fo the more interesting of the 'classic' 4-level stack interchanges in the way in which it intermingles with the local streets. I-710 generally runs below grade through here while all of the ramps connecting it to CA 60 are elevated above grade. Also, there are ramp connections between I-710 and the area surface streets that are laid out almost as though CA 60 didn't exist. CA 60 has an interchange with 3rd St about 1 km west of I-710 (itself a KEWL layout) as well as direct ramp connections to side streets just north of Brooklyn Av via the I-710 stack ramps. The southbound I-710 ramps at 3rd St are verrrry close together (the on ramp merges right before the off ramp diverges, one of the few weaknesses of this interchange), with the 'SB on' CA 60 stack ramp neatly threaded around the 'SB off' 3rd St ramp.

Overall, an interesting example of CalTrans engineering.

As for an eventual extension of I-710 to I-210 in Pasadena, it is still picking its way through the NIMBY resistance and court hearing phase of its planning. I am unaware of any firm date for its construction to begin. I-710 currently ends about 3 km north of the top of this map, just north of its MASSIVE interchange with I-10 (San Bernadino Freeway).
