Metro Detroit, Michigan built its first freeways EARLY. This is readily apparent in the design of several of the interchanges along I-94 in the industrial blue collar southwest suburbs. The connection between the Southfield freeway and I-94 (the 'Detroit Industrial Freeway') is a case in point. Although this interchange has likely been upgraded somewhat since this map was drawn, it still remains a strange tangle of ramps. The ramp from EB I-94 to NB M-39 feeds/fed into the northbound frontage road, using the frontage road for several blocks before merging into the freeway. Most strange, though, is that ALL of the 'on' ramps to I-94 converge on the left.
M-39 itself continues as a Michigan style urban surface expressway to I-75, about 3 km southeast of I-94. I am unsure of any plans to 'upgrade' it to freeway standards.
This interchange is further complicated by the presence of Van Born Road, a major street running westward from M-39 just north of I-94, the ramps of its interchange with M-39 overlapping those of I-94.
Defintely due for industrial strength upgrading.
