I-465/I-465, Boone Co. IN

An entertaining connection...

I-465 runs east-west through here. I-465 is the freeway going off the map to the south.

This interchange is a true anomoly in the interstate highway system. An otherwise mundane directional interchange here just outside of Indianapolis (the Boone-Marion County line is the city limits) takes on an interesting twist in that all of the routes that it connects carry the same number. The east and south legs of this interchange are the I-465 Indianapolis Beltline. The part of I-465 that goes to the west functions as little more than a pair of extra long connector ramps between this beltline and I-65 towards Chicago and LaFayette. However, due to that strange layout, it did not warrant the use of an additional number. In fact, the ramps that connect the west and south legs have very little use in that most of that traffic takes I-65, connecting on a diagonal about 6 km to the south.

There is some question as to whether or not US 52 uses the east-west routing through here. The topo says that it does while other maps say that it doesn't (going around the city to the south).

An interesting anomoly indeed.
