RI 78, Westerly, RI/Pawcatuck (Stonington), CT

'How will this one benefit US??'

Rhode Island is east of the river, Connecticut west. RI 78 is the 'super two' freeway in Rhode Island. I-95 cuts across the northwest corner of the map.

One of the more glaring (though not most major) gaps in the USA's highway system is the 1500 meters or so between RI 78 and I-95 in the Town of Stonington, CT. RI 78 is a bona-fide 'super two' freeway forming a 'beltline' bypass around Westerly, RI, connecting US 1 on the southeast side with CT 2 (the north-south street that the highway ends at) to the northwest. However, it is clearly intended to connect with I-95 to the west, as the interchange at CT 2, including a bridge and 'ghost' roadways, is designed for it and appears to be buildable with very little undue effort. The problem is that this 'gap' is in Connecticut, and (as far as I can tell) ConnDOT isn't all too thrilled at the thought of spending its money to primarily benefit an out of state community. Thus, I am unaware of any near-term plans to fill in this gap.

Should this gap ever be completed and the 'super two' be upgraded to a divided 4 lane freeway (the existing roadway appears to be the 'future' north/west bound side), it would be a natural to receive an 'odd' 3 digit interstate 'spur' number.
