I-80/BR I-80, Sacramento, CA

A failed relocation.

I-80 runs east-west across the top, 'Business Route' I-80 goes to the southwest. Scale is approximately 1 km per UTM grid square.

The business route of I-80 is an old, substandard freeway, likely one of the oldest in California north of the Los Angeles basin. Later on, the current routing of I-80 to the west was built on what would normally be a '3di' bypass routing. This bypass would likely HAVE been an even 3 digit I-80 bypass had the downtown routing been up to FHWA standards for I-80 and had a number been available.

Most interestingly, though, about this end of the 'Business Route' is that an attempt WAS made to eliminate the substandard section of this freeway south of Del Paso Park and its golf course. In the 1970s, as part of the I-80 'bypass', construction of a relocation of the business route north of the park was begun, but was stopped after NIMBY opposition to the reroute solidified. This resulted in 'ghost' ramps, grades and bridges in the median of I-80 from the east BR I-80 interchange westward about 2.5 km to the Union Pacific (ex Southern Pacific) railroad and continuing across the railroad. Since the cancellation of this reroute, the grade of the proposed eastbound roadway (including its bridges) has been incorporated into the routing of the local 'light-rail' transit system.

There is also a 'stub' at this interchange for a continuation of the bypass to the southeast, but I have not learned where this freeway is (or was) intended to go.

BTW, that is Mc Clellan Air Force Base north of I-80 and the railroad.
