I-71/I-80 (Ohio Turnpike)/US 42, Strongsville, OH

A fascinating retrofit.

I-80 (Ohio Turnpike) runs from west to southeast, I-71 goes north-south, and US 42 is the surface road that runs from southwest to north.

This is one of the more interesting of the 'ticket' tollway interchanges. The Ohio Turnpike was opened in the mid 1950s with a fairly typical 'double trumpet' tollgate interchange at US 42. The original tollgate was where the little building is shown along the south side of the connector roadway. Later on, I-71 came onto the scene, and this substantially complicated things here as a connection was added between it and the Turnpike. This was done by building a new 'trumpet' at the Turnpike mainline and extending the old US 42 connector to feed into the new tollgate in an interesting 'loop' arrangement. The site of the original 'trumpet' connections with the mainline is now a minor Turnpike maintanence base. US 42 and I-71 connect just north of this map.

Since this map was produced, the 'trumpet' at US 42 has been replaced with an at grade 'T' intersection.

This is a fascinating interchange to drive through, especially from the EB Turnpike to US 42.
