I-95/I-295/I-495/US 13/US 40/US 202/DE 141, New Castle County, DE

A sprawling junction.

Scale is approximately 1 km per grid square. I-95 comes in from the southwest and heads out to the northeast towards downtown Wilmington, DE; I-295 and I-495 both end here, with I-295 going southeast towards the Delaware Memorial Bridge (to New Jersey) and I-495 to the northeast as a bypass of Wilmington. US 13 is the surface road going diagonally across the SE corner; US 40 comes in from the south with US 13 and goes east with I-295; and US 202 comes in from the north with I-95 and goes south on the crossroad in the western part of the interchange (ending at US 13/40 just off the map. DE 141 is the freeway spur going north from the US 202/I-95 junction into the central Newport, DE area.

Built in a swampy area along the Christina River, this is one of the most land area intensive highway junctions in the eastern USA. It allows for no slow down free flow traffic in all I-route directions except between I-95 (to-from the north) and I-495 (those movements, albeit a little demand routing, must use the cloverleaves at DE 141/US 202). Three of the ramps at the US 13/I-295 connection are left on or off.

One of the more interesting connections here is the retrograde cloverleaf loop from NB US 202 to NB I-95/US 202 and I-295 and I-495. It is a left off from US 202 and connects with a left off from SB DE 141, connecting to NB I-95 also on the left. The ramp from I-295 to NB 141 is also somewhat interesting.

This interchange also shows signs of possibly once being far less than it is now, as the SB I-95 through lanes are dead straight through this complex and there appear to be the remnants of 'ghost ramps' in the DE 141 interchange. However, I have not yet been able to confirm this.
