I-70/US 33/OH 104, Columbus, OH

An interesting urban highway junction.

I-70 runs across the top, US 33 is a major route from southeast Ohio that comes in from the lower right and goes out the top via a city street (College Av), and OH 104 is the freeway at the lower left.

This agglomeration of freeways and city streets on the southeast side of Columbus, OH shows the classic signs of coming into being one little unrelated piece at a time as the city grew around it. The OH 104 freeway was the most recent addition, opening after 1990. Even though three seperate interstate and interstate compatible freeways enter this map, the only way to enter and leave this map without going through at least one regular intersection is via I-70. Most noteworthy are the two rather densly populated neighborhoods that are only accessable via the otherwise interstate compatible US 33 between the railroad and I-70 (I have always wondered how the residents of such neighborhoods get to and from there homes without driving).

Although this is an area that appears ripe for further major improvements, I am unaware of any plans to complete 'interstate compatibility' on US 33 betwen OH 104 and I-70. ODOT is also busy with several other major projects in metro Columbus, most notably I-670 north of downtown.
