I-85, Davidson County, NC

A 'wrong way' highway.

I-85 runs on a northeast to southwest track, north is to the upper left (as per the 'arrow'). Scale is approximately 1 km per grid square on the eastern portion of the map. Thomasville, NC is just off the top of this map, while Lexington, NC is just off the lower left corner. I have enhanced the war memorial/rest area and several of the side roads.

I-85 passes along the Hamby Creek valley in the Lexington/Thomasville, NC area. This is a highly scenic area, and was chosen as the site of a war memorial. To take advantage of this scenic area, and to provide for right hand exits to the war memorial/rest area in the most economical way possible, the sides of I-85 were 'flipped' through this valley. There are other places on the I-system away from major interchanges where the two sides of the highway are reversed, but this is the only one built from scratch in this manner (the others used a former main highway grade for one side of the new interstate while the 'new' side simply used the best available track, which happened to be on the 'wrong side' of the existing grade) .

This section of I-85 also includes a rather interesting 'over-under' side road crossing. Just southwest of the war memorial/rest area a side road (NC 2025) goes over the southwest bound side of I-85 and under the northeast bound side.
