I-210/CA 134 (Foothill/Ventura Freeways), Pasadena, CA

It forms the backdrop for the grand-daddy of all parades :-)

I-210 comes in from the east and goes out to the north, CA 134 continues westward.

The I-210 'Foothill Freeway' is very unusual in that it take a turn at this interchange. Continuing westward from I-210, the freeway becomes the CA 134 'Ventura Freeway'. There are also connections between the freeways and several surface streets within this interchange. The freeway 'spur' running southward here is planned to connect to a northward extension from the I-710 'Long Beach Freeway' from the Alhambra/East Los Angeles area. I am unsure of the status of these plans, except that I do know that they are active.

*Colorado Boulevard is a former routing of US 66. For many years, it also went south on Arroyo Parkway (CA 110), the first street east of the railroad. This street feeds directly into the historic 'Pasadena Freeway'. The source map is unclear on whether or not CA 110 intersects any other numbered highway, or if it has a 'hanging' end at Colorado Boulevard.

*Speaking of the railroad, although (I believe) it is now abandoned, it was for many years a main rail route into the Los Angeles basin, serving Amtrak traffic until the mid 1990s. It tunneled under a few blocks of the city then and went eastward down the median of I-210 for about 3.5 km.

*This is the interchange that you see in the background when watching the New Year's Day 'Tournament of Roses' Parade on all of the TV networks. This little bit of floral heaven lines up on Orange Grove Boulevard south of the freeway and takes the right turn onto Colorado Boulevard. The major spectator stands seen on TV are where the '896' is printed. An aside, Rose Parade floats are *required* to be able to 'collapse' to a height of no more than about 4 meters, this to clear the I-210 bridges over the parade route on a side street (I cannot offhand recall its name) at the other end of Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena. It is truly amazing to see the engineering inginuity exhibited by the float sponsers in reaction to this restriction.
