
I-20 and I-59 run as a multiplex east-west here, I-65 north-south. Downtown Birmingham is just to the east, along the edge of the map.
The I-20/I-59/I-65 interchange here in Birmingham, AL uses a rather unusual and innovative design where the main through roadways of both freeways cross over each other through the interchange. This concept does save some of the cost of bridge construction and right-of-way accquisition over more conventional designs in that the 'left turn' ramps do not have to cross over or under anything. Also, it is fascinating to drive through.
There is at least one other interchange in the USA (near Baltimore, MD) that uses this ramp arrangement.
