I-72/I-172/US 36, Pike Co. IL

I-72 goes east from this interchange, I-172 north and US 36 runs east (multiplexed with I-72) to southwest. The Pike/Adams County line is just north of this interchange.

This otherwise typical freeway to freeway 'trumpet' interchange is interesting in that the main through route through here is from I-72 (east) to I-172 (north). The future westward extension of I-72 to and across a new Mississippi River bridge to replace the narrow old US 36 bridge to Hannibal, MO will be the diverging route at this interchange. The divided 4 lane US 36 southwest of this interchange is currently a surface 'expressway', with an at-grade intersection halfway between I-72/172 and the end of the 4 lanes. This will be upgraded when the I-72 bridge is completed.

There is a 'TEMPORARY/END/I-72' sign going westbound through the interchange.

"INTERCHANGE 4" is the I-72 milepost based number for this interchange.

I-172 continues a short distance northward from here around Quincy, IL, ending at US 24. The 4 lanes continues as a surface expressway, marked as IL 336. This will eventually connect with the 4 lane US 67 north of Macomb, IL, further connecting with I-74 at Galesburg, IL.
