I-77 runs north-south and I-85 runs east-west through here. This interchange is interesting in that the main traffic lanes of I-77 cross over each other through the interchange to allow for more convenient connections for the 'left turn' ramps to and from I-85. The 'left turn' on ramps to I-77 do appear to be on the tight side anyways here. There are other places and interchanges where this 'crossover' occurs, but this is the only one I know of where 'cloverleaf' loops (NB I-77 to WB (SB) I-85 and SB I-77 to EB (NB) I-85) are a part of the mix, all of the others I know of use the 'crossover' soley to allow for more convenient left exits and entrances to and from the cross route. Note how close this interchange is to the two nearest crossroad interchanges on I-85 and the first one south on I-77, with the ramps for the I-85 interchange with Statesville Rd. (US 21) overlapping the ramps for its interchange with I-77.
