I-87, the New York Thruway, runs southwest to northeast through here, I-587 is multiplexed with NY 28 over its entire length and US 209 roughly parallels I-87 a little to the northeast of the Thruway. NY 32 and 213 also have a presence in Kingston. US 209 appears to be an I-compatible freeway from here to about 8-12 km or so to the northeast.
I-587 is one of those interesting anomolies of the I-system in that it has *no* interchanges on its route. It connects the traffic circle ('roundabout' or 'rotary') at the end of the NY Thruway access interchange with city streets on the east side of Kingston, forming a bypass of the downtown area. It's purpose in life appears to be to carry traffic between the Thruway, US 209 and points west and the east side of Kingston (Downtown Kingston streets appear to be poorly laid out for through traffic purposes). There is no I-compatible connection between I-587 and the rest of the I-system and US 209.
There are only a handfull of other I-routes that have no interchanges between their ends (ie, I-381 in Bristol, TN, I-175 and I-375 in St Petersburg, FL and I-395 in Baltimore, MD, to name a few), but I-587 is the only one that I know of that has no direct I-compatible connection with the rest of the I-system.
