I-43 travels a rather roundabout route via Milwaukee and the Lake Michigan shoreline area from Beloit, WI to its north end here just outside of Green Bay. I-43 passes through Green Bay and enters Howard about 1 km from its end at US 41/141. The Green Bay city limit line is the diagonal line going NEward from about the '0' in the 'scale', this being Military Av (BUS US 41), an old US 41 routing. US 141 goes southeastward from here ('Velp Av') through downtown Green Bay, ending at I-43 on the southeast side. The 'previous' routing of US 41 and 141 then continues northwestward and then northward as Velp Av (Brown County 'HS'), reconnecting with the freeway about 12 km north of here.
The most striking feature of this interchange is how tightly this and the US 41/141 'Velp Av' interchanges are packed together, especially for a place that is as generally flat as the Green Bay area. This is due to the highways having to pass through a swampy lowland area near the Lake Michigan/ (bay of) Green Bay shoreline, the busy railroad between the two interchanges and 'Duck Creek', passing just north of the I-43 interchange. Three of the 4 ramps are signed at 50 km/h, and the NB US 41/141 to SB I-43 ramp especially has been known to 'sneak up' on unsuspecting 'first timers', expecting a more free-flowing interchange. (See my 'I-43' page for a couple of photos of this interchange.)
It is very unlikely that there will ever be any kind of highway extension northwestward from here, the urban 'core' of -fast- growing suburban Howard, WI is just off the map to the northwest.
Oh yea, Lambeau Field and the Packers' Training Camp are both about 5 km south of here via Military Av, and then a very short distance to the east (following BUSINESS US 41). :-)
